Why Intel's troubles should concern us all - Axios

chips.indah.link

Warning bells are sounding for the U.S. semiconductor industry as Intel grapples with internal and competitive challenges that could imperil the future of domestic chipmaking.

Why it matters: Chips are some of the only strategic tech products that are actually manufactured in the U.S., accounting for a quarter-million U.S. jobs. They're also a small but key piece in the power struggle between the U.S. and China.

Driving the news: Intel is weighing whether to outsource some manufacturing after struggling mightily to get its next-generation chip production up and running.

  • Costly delays are already handing a technical edge to rivals like AMD, which outsources its manufacturing to Taiwan's TSMC.
  • The percentage of chips made in the U.S. has already declined from 37% in 1990 to 12% today, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association, the trade group that represents U.S. chipmakers.

Policymakers and chip industry reps are now pleading for government intervention to keep what remains of U.S. chip manufacturing in the country.

The big picture: Beijing has grand designs on dominating the global chip market, which would in turn boost China's economic and technological might and could give the country an edge in A.I. and other next-generation technologies.

  • China's efforts have run into troubles of their own, but Intel falling behind will do the U.S. no favors.

Between the lines: For all the talk of how computers and smartphones should be made in the U.S., the practical reality is that we have neither the infrastructure nor the labor force nor the economic setup to bring such manufacturing here.

  • Chips, on the other hand, are highly strategic, require a modest but well-paid labor force and are already made here.

What they're saying: Both Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin talked about the strategic importance of the U.S. chip industry in their confirmation hearings.

  • SIA head John Neuffer said in a statement to Axios, "Semiconductors are critical to our economy, national security, and future innovation."
  • "To strengthen America’s semiconductor supply chains and keep our country on top in chip technology, leaders in Washington need to fully fund the semiconductor manufacturing incentives and research investments called for in the annual defense bill."

That bill — the most recent incarnation of the National Defense Authorization Act — has a provision that provides for federal incentives for domestic manufacturing and investments in semiconductor research.

  • However, those provisions still need to be funded through congressional appropriations.

Be smart: The right government investment and incentives could encourage other firms to expand U.S. chipmaking and prevent an exodus of chip jobs even if Intel does reduce the amount of manufacturing it does in-house.

What's next: Pat Gelsinger, recently tapped to be Intel's new CEO, acknowledged on an earnings call last week that "it's likely that we will expand our use of external foundries for certain technologies and products."

  • But he maintained that he remains "confident that the majority of our 2023 products will be manufactured internally."

Taiwan's economy outgrows China's for the first time in 30 years, as chips demand soars - CNBC

"2020 has been a record year for Taiwan, and we expect the star to continue shining," Angela Hsieh, an economist at British bank Barclays, wrote in a Friday report after Taiwan released the numbers.

The island's strength in exports in the second half of last year — particularly of semiconductors — helped the economy to "easily offset" any drags from the pandemic, said Hsieh. The economist raised her forecast for Taiwan's 2021 growth by 1.2 percentage points to 5.2% — much higher than official projection of 3.83%.

Taiwan has also had relative success in containing the spread of Covid-19, allowing its economy to avoid a strict lockdown experienced by others globally. As of Sunday, the island reported 911 confirmed infections and eight deaths, according to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control.

Semiconductor dominance

Taiwan is a powerhouse in the production of semiconductors, which are important components powering products from cars, to computers and mobile phones.

Demand for chips surged globally when the pandemic forced people to spend more time indoors, as the lockdowns triggered an uptick in sales of consumer electronics such as laptops.

More recently, a global shortage of semiconductors led several automakers — including American carmaker Ford Motor and Japan's Nissan Motor — to cut production at some of their plants.

Economists at research firm TS Lombard estimated that Taiwan and South Korea account for 83% of global processor chip production and 70% of memory chip output — which means the two East Asian economies have a near-monopoly status in both segments of the industry.

That dominance would allow Taiwan and South Korea to "leverage their increased strategic importance for economic and political gains" from the U.S. and China — their two largest customers, the economists said in a Friday note.

"Taiwan and Korea are on the front line of the US-China confrontation, reliant on China for growth, but on the US as guarantor of national security," they said.

For Taiwan, such "wins" have included weapons sales from the U.S. and the lack of economic pressure from China, said TS Lombard economists.

The Chinese Communist Party in Beijing claims Taiwan — a democratic and self-ruled island — as a runaway province that must be reunited with the mainland. The CCP has never ruled Taiwan.

In the near term, China could become more reliant on Taiwan for semiconductors as it cuts out U.S. suppliers, according to TS Lombard. Beijing aims to become self-reliant over the long term as tensions with the U.S. grow, but some analysts said China's ability to do so are still far behind.

... when Mainland China starts to achieve self-reliance in advance technology, not only will it not buy as much from Taiwan as before, it will also become Taiwan's main competitor in the global market.

Iris Pang

chief economist for Greater China, ING

"Cutting out US suppliers further increases PRC reliance on Taiwan and Korea," wrote TS Lombard economists.

"Such is the Mainland dependence on Taiwan, that Beijing is unwilling to apply economic pressure to the island, instead China has adopted 'grey zone' warfare tactics, and even talk of military action, all while continuing to purchase TSMC products," they added, referring to the world's largest semiconductor foundry in Taiwan.

TSMC's shares in Taiwan jumped 60% last year when the coronavirus spread globally. The shares have continued to climb this year, rising by 11.5% in January from last year's close.

'Lone growth engine'

It's a matter of time before mainland Chinese companies catch up to Taiwanese capabilities in producing high-tech electronic parts such as semiconductors, said Iris Pang, chief economist for Greater China at Dutch bank ING.

"A few years from now, when Mainland China starts to achieve self-reliance in advance technology, not only will it not buy as much from Taiwan as before, it will also become Taiwan's main competitor in the global market," she wrote in a Friday report.

Until then, Taiwan's growth — powered by the "lone growth engine" of electronics exports — will likely continue into 2021, added Pang. She explained that demand could come from automakers, as well as consumers upgrading their smartphones and computer equipment.

"All this suggests the market prospects for Taiwan's semiconductor manufacturers are bright this year," said the economist.

"So even if Taiwan arguably depends too much on the electronics sector for economic growth, job opportunities and investment, this is less of a problem given that other economies cannot compete on capacity and technology."

Global Chip Sales Rose 6.5 Percent in 2020 After Year-End Rush: Report - Gadgets 360

chips.indah.link

Global semiconductor sales rose 6.5 percent overall in 2020, as a recovery during the last three months of the year helped offset a sharp dropoff in March and April, when pandemic stay-home orders rolled out around the world.

Global sales were $439 billion (roughly Rs. 32,08 lakh crores) in 2020, according to data from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), a trade group that represents most US chipmakers along with many international firms. The group said sales from US chipmakers were about $208 billion (roughly Rs. 15,20 lakh crores), or about 47 percent of the total.

Chip sales into the United States were $94.15 billion (roughly Rs. 6,87 thousand crores), up 19.8 percent from the previous year.

Falan Yinug, SIA's director of industry statistics and economic policy, said much of the rise in US purchasing was driven by high-end memory chips used in applications such as data centers.

American tech companies such as Amazon.com, Microsoft and Alphabet's Google all saw dramatic rises in the use of cloud computing over the course of 2020 as businesses adapted to working from home.

While US-based companies represented nearly half of semiconductor sales, they represented only about 12 percent of chip manufacturing capacity in 2020. That is down from 37 percent in 1990, as most US companies now source their chips from factories in Asia.

John Neuffer, president and chief executive of the industry group, said legislation passed last year to provide incentives to chip factories in the United States could help change that figure this year. The law could provide funding to US companies such as Intel or GlobalFoundries, as well as foreign firms such as Samsung Electronics or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

"Over the next 10 years, semiconductor manufacturing is going to grow 56 percent," Neuffer said. "We want to make sure we're getting a bigger piece of the manufacturing pie."

Canucks' J.T. Miller: Chips in with assist - CBSSports.com

chips.indah.link

Miller notched an assist, two shots on goal and a plus-3 rating in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Jets.

Miller provided the secondary helper on Zack MacEwen's tally in the second period. Over his last three games, Miller has two goals and three assists. The 27-year-old forward is up to two tallies, eight helpers, 25 hits and 12 shots on net through eight appearances this season. He exceeded a point-per-game pace with 72 points in 69 outings last year, so there's evidence he can keep up his current production for the long run.
