If you’ve ever wanted to pair wine with potato chips, then the Grapes & Graze: Virtual Wine Tasting event (with sheep) could be an opportunity.
On Sept. 5, local nonprofit Sustainability Matters will host the virtual wine tasting with help from Star in the Valley Estate Winery and Route 11 Potato Chips. The event will include a Zoom video that teaches participants how to pair the two from the comfort of their homes.
“This is our first official fundraiser,” said Sari Carp, executive director of Sustainability Matters, a conservation collaborative that leads educational and community events in and around the Shenandoah Valley.
Money raised will go to helping the organization plant a pollinator habitat at Shenandoah County landfill, offer plant swaps around the area and provide education on earth-friendly efforts.
“We always felt that we didn’t want to have just another fundraiser with a boring dinner somewhere,” said Carp.
Tasting packages are available for pickup or home delivery with enough wine and chips for several people.
“There’s plenty of wine in the package for four or five or even six people,” she said.
The package includes:
- 1 full bottle of 2019 The Astronomer, billed as the only orange wine in the Shenandoah Valley
- 1 half bottle of 2018 Cabernet Franc
- 1 half bottle of 2019 Rosé
- 1 half bottle of 2019 Vidal Blanc
- Route 11 potato chips for the pairings
Also included is admission to the Zoom event, where Star in the Valley owners Cara Mroczek and Shane Waller will offer an overview of Virginia wine and the challenges that growers face.
“They’ll be talking a little bit about how to taste wine in general and how to pair wine,” Carp said.
Also included in the virtual event will be some information about the heritage dwarf sheep, Yuri and Shep, who keep the vineyard’s weeds at bay and cutting down on insects that would damage the grapes.
Prices for wine tasting packages are $150 for a home shipment that arrives a few days before the event or $130 to arrange for a pickup at Star in the Valley. Registration ends Aug. 31.
Carp said the idea for a wine and chip pairing developed after a conversation with Sarah Cohen, owner of Route 11 Potato Chips in Mount Jackson, about a wine-tasting event she had been a part of.
“Years ago we did a sparkling wine and chip pairing fundraiser for the Wayside Theatre, and it was fun and successful and memorable,” Cohen said.
“I mentioned it to Sari and she just ran with it,” said Cohen.
Carp said she had intended the fundraiser to take place in person, before the COVID-19 pandemic happened.
“It’s challenging to be doing our first fundraiser in the middle of a pandemic,” Carp said.
“I really do think that we are doing the only wine tasting in history that contains both potato chips and sheep.”
