Cod or pollock. Malt vinegar or tartar sauce. French fries or chips.
Bring on fish fry season.
Around metro Detroit, there are plenty of places where fish and chips are the best catch.
Ash Wednesday signaled the start of the Lenten season. It's when Christians across metro Detroit and beyond observe a period of reflection, repentance and sacrifice for the six weeks leading up to Easter.
Giving up meat is the most popular observance.
And for that reason, Lent is also when area restaurants serving fish and chips reel in (sorry, I couldn't resist) customers, especially on Fridays.
This year, with seating-capacity limits still in place because of the coronavirus pandemic, the landscape of favorite places for a fish fry most likely has changed. Many places also have different hours than before.
But that doesn’t mean the fish has changed. Area restaurants known for fish are getting busy for the Lenten season battering and frying pieces of fish, mainly cod or pollock, until crisp and golden. Most of the fish entrees come with a side of French fries or chips, coleslaw, and tartar sauce.
In place of its traditional indoor Friday fish fry the Vintage House Banquet and Catering in Fraser pivoted to a drive up and pick up fish fry. The fish fry started several weeks ago ahead of Lent.
Alorea Chodoea, the facility's event coordinator, said the drive-up program has exceeded expectations.

"It's been more popular than its indoor fish fry," Chodoea said. "People love the contactless service and the wait time is 5 to 10 minutes tops."

But we know there are plenty more and have added a few after seeing lots of kudos on social media.
If you've got a favorite fish and chip or fish fry place, drop us line and tell us about it. Send suggestions of places with "Fish Fry" in the subject field to food@freepress.com.
