What’s more American than burgers and fries? After these recent warm, sunny days, many of us are ready to get out the grill and enjoy a tasty, grilled burger.
If you really want some great-tasting burgers, instead of using the pre-made patties, you could make the patties yourself with fresh ground beef and a few added ingredients, like the blue cheese crumbles this recipe calls for. If you’re not a fan of blue cheese, you can use feta cheese and still add a twist to a great old favorite.
Instead of the usual French fries, you could also change those up and make these Baked Sweet Potato Chips. They will make that burger taste even better and probably are healthier for you, too!
BLUE CHEESE BURGERS
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese (or feta cheese)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)
2 tablespoons dry ranch salad dressing mix
2 tablespoons barbecue sauce (your choice)
4 (1/2-inch) slices of red onion
4 slices American cheese
4 slices of tomatoes
4 hamburger buns, split
Lettuce leaves
Heat grill. In medium bowl, combine ground beef, cheese, parsley, garlic salt, ground red pepper, salad dressing mix and barbecue sauce. Mix gently until well blended. Shape mixture into 4 patties about 4 inches in diameter.
When ready to grill, place patties on gas grill over medium heat or on charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from medium coals. Cook 13 to 15 minutes or until thoroughly cooked, turning once.
Meanwhile, brush onion slices with olive oil. Add to grill during last 5 to 8 minutes of cooking time for patties. Cook onion until tender, turning once.
Place onion slice on each patty on grill. Remove from grill and place a lettuce leaf on top of bottom half of hamburger bun. Add a slice of cheese, place the patty with grilled onion slice on top of cheese and top with tomato slice and favorite condiment and top with other half of bun. Makes 4 servings.
Note: You can also use a Foreman Grill to cook the burgers, without turning patties or onions over.
SWEET POTATO CHIPS
1 large sweet potato, peeled
2 tablespoons olive oil
Sea salt
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray 2 baking sheets with cooking spray. Thinly slice potatoes into 1/8-inch thick slices. Arrange slices on baking sheets so they do not overlap. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle lightly with salt.
Bake chips for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve hot. Makes 2-4 servings.
