MANISTEE — A week off, a shorthanded lineup, a tough test.

All things considered, the Manistee girls soccer team gave a solid performance Monday despite falling 3-0 to Western Michigan Christian.

The Chippewas (2-1), who had to cancel three games last week due to the school's suspension on sports, were without several starters in their return because of COVID-19-related quarantines.

"I'm really proud of the girls, especially since we were without some starters," said Manistee coach Jaclyn Kaminski. "We pulled girls up (from the JV team) and moved girls around to new positions tonight, and I thought they did really, really well."

Western Michigan Christian got on the board early, with a goal at 34:03, and scored again 19:43 in the first to make it 2-0.

The Chippewas, however, clamped down and played even with the Warriors for the rest of the half and most of the second.

"The biggest thing was to keep our heads up," Kaminski said of bouncing back from the early deficit. "We know mistakes are going to happen, and you've just got to learn from them. The girls did that.

"We saw what we needed to clean up pretty quickly," she added. "We started off not winning a lot of the 50-50 balls, but that picked up as the game went on and the girls settled in and gained more confidence."

Manistee goalkeeper Rachael Owens was busy in net on Monday, but made an impressive 21 saves.

"She did phenomenal tonight," Kaminski said. "This is really the first game that she saw a lot of action in net, and she did great. She made some outstanding saves and really helped keep that score close."

The Warriors snuck one more score in with just 3:54 remaining in the contest to make it 3-0.

"West Michigan Christian is a great program and always brings a good game," Kaminski said. "So, for the girls to play as well as they did with everything going on, I'm really proud of them."

The Chippewas will be back on the field Wednesday, when they host Orchard View.
