It's already been a season to remember for the Manistee track and field team, and the Chippewas are hoping to make more memories at the state finals.
But first, they'll have to get through one of the more stacked Division 3 regionals in the state on Friday at Benzie Central.
"Our regional is really tough," said Manistee coach Eric Thuemmel. "It's hard to look and say, 'Yeah, we'll definitely qualify here, and this kid's going to make it through.' We know we have our work cut out for us in every event.
"Expectations are trickier to have when the region is so tough, but I really think we have a fair shot in a lot of events."
Manistee will be one of 16 teams in the regional, which is slated to start at 1 p.m. on Friday at Benzie Central. The Chippewas enter the meet off a high note, as they swept the Lakes 8 Conference championship last week, winning both the boys and girls titles.
A number of conference champions emerged from that May 14 meet, as the boys were led by wins from Dylan Johnson in the 400-meters (55.92); Luke Kooy in the pole vault (11' 8); and the team of Luke Senters, Griffen Antal, Abdul Ghennewa and Johnson in the 4x800 relay (9:07.84).
The Manistee girls had victories from Libby McCarthy in the 300-meter hurdles (52.61) and the high jump (4' 10); Lacey Zimmerman in the 100-meter dash (13.94); Ashtyn Janis in the 200 (28.75); Raegan Codden in the 100-meter hurdles (19.31); and Danni Miles in the long jump (14' 7.5).
The Chippewas also won three of four relays in girls competition, as Zimmerman, Kasey Eckhardt, Codden and Janis took first in the 4x100 (55.27); Zimmerman, Eckhardt, McCarthy and Janis won the 4x200 (1:55.18); and Allie Thomas, McCarthy, Eckhardt and Zimmerman won the 4x400 (4:33.52).
"The season's gone better than I even expected," Thuemmel said. "We've really looked good over the past few weeks. I've liked the improvement, and we've had some really good workouts this week.
"The kids are definitely going to perform to the best of their ability, I know that," he added. "I'm expecting a lot of (personal records) on Friday night. Especially with the warmer weather, these kids are ready to fly. Again, we're just going to see what happens.
"With some luck, some good weather, hopefully everything shakes out well for us. I expect good things."
