CLEVELAND, Ohio — Thursday night, the Cleveland Browns selected cornerback Greg Newsome II out of Northwestern as the No. 26 pick in the NFL Draft. Even though he was the fourth CB chosen, Newsome displayed a Baker Mayfield sized chip on his shoulder by proclaiming himself the best corner in the draft.
It appears Newsome has plenty of confidence to go along with his size, speed, intelligence and ball skills. Cornerback, like quarterback, is one position where an abundance of confidence is a prerequisite for the job.
Newsome had only one interception in college, but plays tough press coverage and finds the ball well.
He missed some games in college due to injuries, but his medical history doesn’t worry the Browns, partially because he is so young (not yet 21) and still growing.
He should be able to challenge for a starting job or at least be a capable sub for Greedy Williams or Denzel Ward.
