GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The number of old-school Arthur Treacher’s restaurants left in the U.S. is down to one after the recent closing of the Garfield Heights location.
The restaurant at 12585 Rockside Rd. served the iconic brand’s famous fish and chips for more than 40 years. But sometime in the last few days, for sale signs were posted in the windows along with a letter signed by the owner and taped to the front door.
“Too hot to cook, not enough help, in need of a long vacation,” the note, written by owner Ben Vittoria, states.
The closing leaves the Arthur Treacher’s at 1833 State Road in Cuyahoga Falls as the nostalgic brand’s last remaining brick-and-mortar restaurant in the country serving the original menu. The restaurant is also owned by Vittoria.
Arthur Treacher’s was founded in 1969, hitting its peak in the 1970s with more than 800 locations. The chain went bankrupt in the early 80s. In 2002, Nathan’s Famous bought the rights to market the Arthur Treacher’s name. The Coney Island-born hot dog chain announced plans last week to revive the brand nationwide as a ghost kitchen concept.
