JENISON — Manistee's Libby McCarthy has had a standout freshman season and added another accolade to her name Saturday at the Division 3 state track finals in Jenison.
McCarthy placed eighth in high jump with a leap of 4' 11, earning a medal and All-State honors to conclude her first varsity season with the Chippewas.
"That was the goal," said Manistee track coach Eric Thuemmel. "The goal was to get her on the podium for her first time there. So, mission accomplished. We were really happy about that and proud of her."
McCarthy was Manistee's lone state qualifier after punching her ticket to the finals in a tough regional in Benzie on May 21. On Saturday, she matched her leap of 4' 11 from the regional round.
"She looked really good the first few jumps — 4' 9 and 4' 11 — and she just missed at 5' 1. It was so close. She had a really good first jump at it, but wasn't quite able to clear it."
McCarthy was the standout among a crop of newcomers this year for the Chippewas, who swept the Lakes 8 Conference championships, both boys and girls, earlier this season.
"It really speaks to our depth," Thuemmel said, "and a lot of these kids are out for the first time on varsity. We just had a solid group of them this year, and they were willing to make every effort to stay healthy and perform well in a trying season and trying situation. It really paid off.
"The future definitely looks promising for Manistee track and field."
