What Thursday major woes?

Rory McIlroy started strong Thursday afternoon at the U.S. Open. He birdied the opening hole at Torrey Pines' South Course, and as the wind picked up and the course firmed, he strung together par after par for much of the front nine.

That set the stage for his highlight of the day. After hitting his first two shots in the rough at the par-4 seventh hole, McIlroy had 33 yards to the hole from a juicy lie behind the green. He holed it.

McIlroy, who has shot 75 or worse in four of his last six opening major rounds, turned in a bogey-free, 2-under 33. Three bogeys and a birdie on the back nine had him back at even par, before the horn blew for the suspension of play. Because it was not a threatening situation, but darkness, players were allowed to complete the hole on which they had started.

McIlroy was on the par-5 18th and hustled through three shots and one 8-foot putt for a closing birdie and a little extra sleep in the morning.

"Yeah, it was really nice. The birdie is awesome. I mean, that putt was pretty, I was sort of like, I think it's straight, I'll hit it straight and we'll see," McIlroy said after shooting 1-under 70, three off the Day 1 lead. "But, yeah, it was nice to get in, get an extra hour of sleep tonight and it was a bonus to birdie in as well."
