TSMC says has begun construction at its Arizona chip factory site - Reuters

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW) (TSMC) has started construction at a site in Arizona where it plans to spend $12 billion to build a computer chip factory, its chief executive said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the company's annual technology presentation to clients and investors, held online for the second straight year because of the pandemic, CEO C.C. Wei said the planned factory remains on track to start volume production of chips using the company's 5-nanometer production technology starting in 2024.

TSMC is expected to be one of several companies, including Intel Corp (INTC.O) and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), competing for some of the $54 billion in subsides for the chip industry that advanced in the United States Senate last week.

Reuters previously reported that TSMC plans to build as many as six factories at the Arizona site over a 10- to 15-year span.

TSMC, the world's biggest manufacturer of semiconductors on contract, has taken centre-stage in the global supply chain equation amid a worldwide shortage of chips that is hurting industries from automobiles to consumer electronics.

Its shares have soared since the COVID-19 pandemic began, making it Asia's most valuable manufacturing company with a market capitalisation of $563 billion, more than twice that of Intel's.

TSMC announced in April a $100 billion investment plan over the next three years to increase capacity at its factories. Wei reiterated that number, which will include $30 billion in spending this year, at the presentation.

"That will give us enough manufacturing capacity to support the growth of our clients," he said.

Wei also said the company has developed a version of its 5-nanometer chipmaking process certified for use by automakers for advanced applications like artificial intelligence, though the new offering is unlikely to alleviate the current chip shortages because the shortages are of less advanced chips.

He said TSMC’s next generation of 3-nanometer chipmaking technology remains on track to start volume production at the company’s “Fab 18” factory in Tainan, Taiwan, in the second half of next year.

NEWPORT FOOD SCENE: On National Fish and Chips Day, find your catch at a local spot - newportri.com

chips.indah.link

By official decree (from those decree such things), the first Friday of June is recognized annually as National Fish and Chips Day.

Apparently this became official in 2015, when the National Edible Oil Distributors Association (NEODA) wanted to raise awareness of the fried fish industry and its impact on so many communities (you knew that Big Edible Oil was behind this, didn’t you?).

While Fish and Chips may make you think of Great Britain, where it is the national dish, it’s safe to say any seaside community will serve up a version. Aquidneck Island, of course, is no exception.

Fish and Chips first arrived on the scene in Great Britain in the late 19th century. The fried fish came first (around the mid-16th century) via Western Sephardic Jews escaping the Inquisition. They brought a recipe from Portugal and Spain for Pescado Frito — covering a fish in flour and frying it in oil. It was typically served cold for Friday Sabbath as cooking on the Sabbath is forbidden in Jewish law.

More: Here are the restaurants offering outdoor dining in Newport County

The flour and oil preserved the fish so it could be prepared ahead of time. There’s debate about who first added “Chips” into the mix, but it looks like adding fried potatoes to the combination became a thing toward the end of 1800s. (The frying of potatoes is believed to have come from the Belgiums in the late 1700’s).

Around the same time Fish met Chips, trawl fishing was starting to change the industry, allowing fisherman to haul in much larger catches. With more fresh fish coming in, there was more available for areas further inland, including cities. That meant more fish and chip carts, too. And because fish and chips were a cheap, filling and high-caloric food, it quickly became a mainstay for the working class of industrialized cities throughout England.

There’s no clear path known how fish and chips came to the United States, but it’s safe to assume that — like all good food ideas — the idea just spread. It was likely sailors or immigrants looking for the taste of home who recreated it here.

Aquidneck Island would have been an ideal spot for the dish to take off. With fresh fish coming in through the harbors and fresh potatoes farmed throughout the island where the soil was ideal for spuds, it was meant to be.

While today there may not be an authentic Chip Wagon in the streets of Newport selling us our fish and chips in a wrap of newspaper (although there should be), there’s no shortage of the dish in town.

If you are in downtown Newport, head to the Red Parrot for its RFP Fish & Chips made with locally caught white fish in tempura batter and served with fries and homemade slaw. Or try the Ale Battered Fish and Chips across the street at Midtown Oyster Bar.

More: NEWPORT FOOD SCENE: What's been missing from the dining out experience? The people.

Down the street, The Mooring has been serving up its version of fish and chips since the late 1980s using fresh Atlantic haddock and a batter made with local beer. Benjamin’s has a great version, as does The Lawn at Castle Hill. Naturally, Flo’s features fish and chips on its menu, too (a crunchy version).

If you want the authentic experience of getting your fresh fish and chips at the pub, our local pubs are ideal (but you may want to refrain from the Great Britain celebration at all our Irish pubs). Fastnet serves up some of the best in town, and O’Brien’s can stake the same claim.

The folks at Busker’s make their batter with Irish ale (as any good Irishman would). Try the fish and chips at the Speakeasy Bar and Grille, or at The Deck Restaurant if you are out for drinks and fun.

The Atlantic Grille uses Sam Adams in the batter for its fish and chips. The Portsmouth Publick House adds Narragansett Lager. The Skiff Bar at the Newport Marriott uses a buttermilk batter. Brick Alley Pub fries the fish Rhode Island-style, using a lighter breading so they’re not heavily beer-battered. Foodworks in Portsmouth makes them the same way.

More: NEWPORT FOOD SCENE: Good help can be hard to find, but Megs' Aussie Milk Bar has it

The Blue Plate Diner double-batters their fish. And at Anthony’s Seafood, you can choose either fried cod or fried flounder to go with your chips.

There are really plenty of spots to get fish and chips when you’re looking to celebrate this sacred day. You can get them at The Reef or at Annie’s on Bellevue. They are featured at the Gulf Stream, at Coddington Brewery, at Bishop's 4th Street Diner and at Localz in Portsmouth.

You can order them at La Forge, at Tremblay’s Bar and Grill, at Rhea’s Kitchen and at Johnny's Restaurant & Patio Bar. You can even get yours on the beach at Easton’s Beach Snack Bar or grab them as you're leaving the beach at Ticket’s Bar & Grille.

You can even get your fix at the Newport Creamery with an Awful, Awful to wash it down.

While fish and chips may be the national dish of Great Britain, there sure is a lot of evidence it could become the official dish of Newport. And why shouldn’t it be?

Who can’t appreciate a simply prepared dish that celebrates the bounty of our shores and land. It might not be as esteemed as lobster rolls, quahogs or calamari, but if you are looking for a meal that captures the allure of simple seaside dining, look no further than fish and chips.

That’s something to celebrate this Friday (and not just because Big Edible Oil is behind it).

Inside Erik Estrada's Life After CHiPs - Nicki Swift

chips.indah.link

As reported by Parade, actor Erik Estrada had aspirations to be a police officer all along — until he fell into acting, that is.

"I was going to be a New York cop before I became an actor," Estrada divulged during the 2007 interview. "I couldn't take the test until I was 18, and at 17 I got bit by the acting bug. I gave myself until I was 30. If I had some success, fine. If I didn't, I'd come back and fulfill my dream and my mother's dream," he continued.

While Estrada serves as a reserve officer with the United States Federal Marshals, he maintains that he has been able to do a lot in his non-acting role. "With the feds, I am part of the Internet Crimes Against Children TaskForce," he explained. "We get on the Internet, and we go for those guys. The 'I'm 13 years old' guys. It's the new crime wave. I'm also working for the charity Safe Surfing USA, which sends U.S. Marshals to schools to teach kids about Internet safety. Kids need to watch out for the predators and these people who want to steal their innocence."

Since beginning his turn as a reserve officer, Estrada has expanded upon his law enforcement career, as he joined the police force in Idaho — a true "life imitating art" moment. Well done, Officer Estrada!

Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips returning nationwide as a ghost kitchen courtesy of Nathan’s Famous - cleveland.com

chips.indah.link

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Arthur Treacher’s is coming back, not that it ever left Northeast Ohio.

Nathan’s Famous, the Coney Island-born hot dog chain, is reviving the iconic fish & chips brand as a ghost kitchen concept.

Franchises, which won’t have brick and mortar locations but instead exist on food delivery apps, will serve Arthur Treacher’s classic fried seafood and chicken menu. Nathan’s Famous plans to add a modern twist to the offerings, with “upgraded proteins, more contemporary builds and a focus on shrimp.” That means new items such as the Boom Boom Shrimp Platter, Boom Boom Fries and even Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and hand-dipped chicken sandwiches alongside favorites like the original Fish and Chips platter, Shrimp and Chips basket, hushpuppies and more. No word yet if any of it will be served in a paper box resembling a British ship.

“We are thrilled to provide operators across the country with the opportunity to add Arthur Treacher’s to their portfolio,” said Nathan’s senior vice president James Walker in a press release. “Nathan’s Famous and Arthur Treacher’s have a long-standing relationship and we have worked diligently to keep the brand’s traditional menu items while also evolving the menu to fit the Nathan’s mantra of ‘Craveable, Memorable and Instagrammable’ product that we believe both operators and customers will love.”

The announcement is a boon to nostalgic fast-food fans. Arthur Treacher’s had more than 800 stores across the country during its peak in the 1970s. Today, only two are left. Both are in Northeast Ohio, in Garfield Heights and Cuyahoga Falls. Nathan’s Famous’s, meanwhile, has just one Cleveland-area location, at Crocker Park in Westlake.

Chip giants are making more money than ever as the semiconductor shortage rages - CNBC

The world's 10 biggest chip manufacturing companies saw their revenues surge to a record high in the first quarter of 2021, according to market research firm TrendForce.

The combined quarterly total revenue of the chipmakers, known as foundries, rose to a record high of $22.75 billion in the first quarter, according to a TrendForce blog published Monday.

Chips are used in everything from cars and games consoles, to washing machines and toothbrushes. They form part of the life blood of the global economy and are vital to many of the world's biggest industries. But they're also in short supply —  and the shortage could last until 2023.

"Owing to soaring demands for various end devices, manufacturers have been ramping up their component procurement activities, and foundry capacities, as a result, have been in shortage since 2020, with various foundries raising their wafer prices and adjusting their product mixes to ensure profitability," TrendForce analyst Joanne Chiao wrote.

Around 57% of the world's chip foundry revenues in the last quarter were generated by one Taiwanese chipmaker: TSMC, or the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation.

The Taipei-headquartered firm saw its revenue climb to $12.9 billion in the first quarter, up 2% on the first quarter of 2021, according to TrendForce, which analyzed how well each of the company's various chips sold.

The U.S. and the European Union have said they want to be more self-reliant when it comes to semiconductors as the vast majority of the world's chips are made in Asia.

TSMC chips

TSMC's 7, 12 and 16 nanometer (nm) chips are the company's main revenue drivers, according to TrendForce.

"The revenue from the 7nm foundry service has kept climbing at a stable pace thanks to orders from AMD, MediaTek, and Qualcomm," Chiao said, adding that sales are up 23% on the last quarter.

Meanwhile, revenue for 12nm and 16nm chips has "grown on account of the demand related to MediaTek's 5G RF (radio frequency) transceivers and Bitmain's cryptocurrency mining machines," TrendForce added, highlighting how sales are up almost 10% on the last quarter.

However, sales of TSMC's smallest and most innovative 5nm chips actually saw a quarterly decrease, Chiao said, adding that the main reason is because Apple (TSMC's largest 5nm client) "entered the off-season for device production."

Storm hurts Samsung

Elsewhere, South Korean chip giant Samsung saw its foundry revenue drop 2% on the last quarter to $4.1 billion.

Chiao said that's partly because a freak winter storm in February in Texas caused power outages in Austin and forced Samsung to temporarily stop producing chips at one of its plants in the state.

Elsewhere, Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corporation saw its quarterly revenues climb 5% quarter on quarter to $1.6 billion, while China's SMIC saw its climb 15% to $1.1 billion.

TrendForce expects the chip foundries to see further revenue growth as the prices of the chip wafers they produce continue to rise and demand persists.

It said the quarterly total revenue of the top 10 foundries will "once again reach a historical high" by undergoing a 1-3% increase quarter-on-quarter for the second quarter of 2021.
